Starting on a new web site

by Michael F. Collins, III May 16, 2009 09:25

I’m once again picking up on a project to build a new web site. I’m happy with BlogEngine.NET running my blog, but I’m looking for more features that a blog. As I hopefully build my ImaginaryFinance idea to completion, what I really want for this site is to turn ImaginaryRealities.com into a full company portal that will feature my blog, plus product information, a knowledge base, support site, discussion forums, an online store, and provide other company and customer-related features.

I’ve been looking at Umbraco as well as a content management system to drive the web site. While I like Umbraco and like the improvements that have gone into the 4.0.x releases, I’m still not sure that it fits in with what I’m looking for. It’s not a knock against Umbraco at all. Umbraco’s a great content management system. But I’m looking to do things a little differently than they are, so I don’t think that I’m going to use that.

Instead, I’m going to break my own rules, I think, and start to build my own web site once again. I’m more optimistic lately about taking on this project once again (my web site has traditionally been the bane of my existence). But with my recent successes behind getting ImaginaryFinance moving, I’m feeling more energized and optimistic as a software developer, and I think that I’ve reached an inner peace with myself that will allow my to accomplish my goals with the new web site project.

As I build the new web site, I’ll be blogging about my experiences and sharing code samples for anyone that is interested in building their own web site and using my experiences to help drive them. Stay tuned.
